Maximizing Impact: How a Youth Worker Enhances Services Through Social Media

Sophie Graham

Hello, Happy New Year, It’s Sophie from the Youth Team here! I am so excited to be back at the start 2025, it’s going to be a great one with lots of exciting plans, known and unknown ahead for The Shed!

I have been in my role here at The Shed for three and a half years, I started as a part time member of the Youth Team and two years ago became a full time Youth and Schools Worker.

One thing I love about this job is how different every day looks. One main part of my role is running the Social Media pages for The Shed, creating content and sharing updates. Each week there is so much on at The Shed, I can’t possibly find the time to post about it all, it’s a great problem to have! I enjoy finding new ways to share things and enjoy learning new skills using Canva, iMovie and Cap Cut to create many posts. As much as I have seen the negative impact social media can have, I can also see how it can be used to bring others joy and encouragement, which is what I try to convey through our content. It's great working alongside other members of the Youth team and those within our various Shed services to share updates and relevant posts. I enjoy getting out of the office to get a Behind the Scenes look at what our other teams here at The Shed are doing through services such as Little Stars, The Shed café and many more! I enjoy getting to stay behind the camera and capture moments, it’s incredible looking back even over the 3 and a half years I’ve been here at the change and transformation through The Shed. When I started there was a staff team of 5 and now the team has grown to 15 members, really amazing!

As well as creating content for our socials, I am often busy creating graphics for new logos, flyers, banners, leaflets, PowerPoints and more, working alongside team members as they run with visions for new projects or want to improve a service we already offer.

When I’m not working on my laptop or taking pictures, I spend the rest of my working week working with and alongside young people aged P7-S6 through Mentoring sessions, Thursday Youth Nights, Friday Drop In, Saturday P7 Club, Primary School Sessions “Game Changers”, our lunchtime Drop in at the Nicolson and lots more! It’s always the highlight of my week being able to support and come alongside any young person who needs some encouragement or guidance.

For the year ahead, I am looking forward to seeing the completion of The Barn being built and can’t wait to see all the new services and opportunities this will provide for our community! I am excited for another year of working with great young people and alongside the best staff team!

Keep an eye out on Socials for our updates each week!
