Exploring the Vital Role of the Recovery and Development Coordinator at the Shed Project

Hello, my name is Iain, and I am honoured to serve as the Recovery and Development Coordinator for the Shed Project. In this role, I work with individuals facing addiction to alcohol and drugs, as well as those dealing with mental health challenges. I have been in this position for over two years and have more than 20 years of experience in this field.

The Shed has partnered with Bethany Christian Trust, an organization dedicated to supporting the homeless and those struggling with addiction on the mainland. This collaboration aims to enhance the services provided by the Shed and further develop their impactful work in the community. By joining forces, both organizations can share resources and expertise, ultimately benefiting individuals in recovery and those facing homelessness.

At the Shed, my focus is on supporting individuals on their recovery journeys related to substance use and mental health. We offer several groups:

The Well

This is a drop-in group for anyone over 18 who is in recovery from alcohol and drugs, as well as for those who have loved ones experiencing similar challenges. Drop-in sessions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 AM to 4 PM, and Fridays from 7 PM to 9:30 PM. We provide a safe environment for individuals to connect and receive peer support. Additionally, I offer one-on-one support using tools like the Wellbeing Web and Outcome Star, guiding individuals through their recovery. I also provide satellite support, meeting people in their homes or other comfortable locations, and assist with appointments related to healthcare or benefits.

The Ark

This is a female-only drop-in group for those in recovery from alcohol and drug use, meeting every Friday from 10 AM to 12 PM upstairs in the Shed.

The Shed Café

This café serves the entire community and is operated by individuals in recovery. It aims to enhance the work of The Well by providing a sense of purpose and opportunities for skill development. Participants can earn food hygiene certificates and receive other training. Those involved in the café can choose their roles, whether it’s clearing tables, serving customers, taking orders, or handling payments. We also encourage them to engage with café visitors, fostering hope and confidence in others facing similar situations.

I truly enjoy my work and the opportunity it gives me to assist those in need, especially those who are marginalized by society. My goal is to be a welcoming presence, a compassionate listener, and a supportive individual who genuinely cares about the well-being of everyone who comes to the Shed.
